An IEW writing contest for all aspiring and accomplished writers, ages 9 to 19.

IEW is giving away a FREE IEW pen to every entrant, and they have awesome prizes for the top three in each category for both the students and their teachers!

  • First Prize: $100 (for student) + $100 IEW gift certificate (for parent or teacher)
  • Second Prize: $50 (for student) + $50 IEW gift certificate (for parent or teacher)
  • Third Prize: $20 (for student) + $20 IEW gift certificate (for parent or teacher)
Here's how to participate:
1. Figure out your category.
If you’re familiar with IEW Structure and Style, each group of ages corresponds to one of our levels:

  • Level A (ages 9–11)
  • Level B (ages 12–14)
  • Level C (ages 15–18)

2. Write your assignment.
We have two writing different assignments, one for Level A and one for Levels B and C. These writing prompts must be followed in order for your entry to be considered.
LEVEL A: It is often said that it is “more blessed to give than to receive.” Have you had an experience in your life where you received great satisfaction from giving your time or talents to someone and experiencing a blessing or joy? Describe that experience, and tell a bit about what you learned from it.
LENGTH: 1–3 paragraphs
LEVELS B and C:  Ben Carson said, “Perhaps it would be useful to highlight the fact that the average American lives to be about 80 years of age. The first 20 to 25 years are spent either preparing oneself through education or not preparing. If you prepare appropriately, you have 55 to 60 years to reap the benefits. If you fail to prepare, you have 55 to 60 years to suffer the consequences.” What are you doing as a young person now that is preparing you for the rest of your life?
LENGTH: 5–7 paragraphs
3. Submit your entry.
By April 15, 2015, fill out the form on the link below, and upload your paper. Papers will be evaluated by IEW online instructors. Winners will be announced on April 28.
