We will have a sizable class, so I expect your attention and cooperation. Parents, you are welcome to stay and observe! Not only will you better understand the concepts I will be teaching, but it may help you transfer them to other areas of your school. Please call me or email me if you have comments or questions.

What is the difference between the #5 and #2 sentence openers when using the word "since"?

What is the difference between the #5 and #2 sentence openers when using the word "since"?

The word, "since" is also a preposition.

EXPLANATION 1

Remember that a #2 includes the primary word (in your case, since) plus a noun, like "Since 1939. . . . "

The #5 includes the primary word plus a clause which includes a verb, like "Since he gained power. . . . "

The #5 always is followed by a comma; the #2 is followed by a comma when it needs one for clarity or when it is a long opener (say 5 words or more).

EXPLANATION 2
Since followed by a noun (object of preposition) makes it a #2 opener.
For example: Since the storm, the dog has been scared.

"Since" followed by a verb makes it a subordinate clause, this is a #5

For example: Since I am I tired, I will go to bed early tonight.

This is important to understand because if you use the SRN, you'll see that www.asia.uubab is taught which includes:
unless, until, before, after, because.

Parent Letter July 2012

Parents are the first and best teachers of their children and this class celebrates that. Parents are encouraged to dive into IEW with, through and along side their children.  This class is NOT easy but it is amazing . . . if students stick with it.  They will need you. Please schedule IEW time everyday at home and be prepared to help, facilitate, and encourage.

FOCUS OF CLASS: This writing class focuses on stylistic techniques taught incrementally to establish a well-balanced style of writing including but not limited to exposition papers, critiques, creative writing assignments, and the formal research essay.

GRADES: Evaluation will be discerned with the use of a matrix that includes all elements and the student's completion of required elements.
Additionally, basic grammar, computer usage, and writing skills will be graded. There is an automatic 10 point deduction (per week) for late essays, FIX-ITS, vocabulary words and KWOs.

BASIC MATERIALS:
1)  Teaching Writing: Structure and Style WORKBOOK
