Due November 6 (Brainstorming/KWO -- Jabberwocky)

Jabberwocky  1871
by LEWIS CARROLL    (Rev. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson)      born: January 27, 1832 - died: January 14, 1898
'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought--
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One two! One two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Ready to go down the rabbit hole?
To go down the rabbit hole: To begin a process or journey that is particularly
complex, sometimes even strange or chaotic, especially one that becomes
increasingly so as it develops or unfolds.
"Down the rabbit hole" is a metaphor for an entry into the unknown.
On the internet, a rabbit hole frequently refers to an extremely engrossing
and potentially time consuming journey into the world wide web of “infinite” information.
(An allusion to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.)

How to Write a Conclusion (General)

~~> Your conclusion is your chance to have the last word on your subject. The conclusion allows you to synthesize your thoughts and reiterate the importance of your paragraphs. It is also your opportunity to make a good final impression.

~~> Your conclusion can go a little bit beyond the confines of the assignment. You can elaborate (slightly) on the significance of your findings and/or opinions.

~~> Your conclusion should make your readers glad they read your paper. This last paragraph gives your reader something to take away that will help them see things differently or appreciate your country.

REMEMBER THE REQUIRED SECOND TO LAST OR LAST SENTENCE:
The most significant thing about ___________________ is. . . . “ and then pick one of your topics and tell us why. You can use a synonym for “significant” (aspect,  feature, characteristic, etc.).
The last sentence must reflect, reiterate, repeat, or restate @ least part of your title.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We made a list in class of the many ways a writer can spice up a conclusion.
Choose one (two at the very most).
1. Revisit thesis statement and summarize main point – broaden out
2. Ask or answer a question
3. Benefit
4. Suggested course of action and/or call to action
5. Finish the story
6. End with a quotation or familiar saying

7. End with funny or humorous statement (or  VERY short story)

Harriet Tubman (recite on October 30)

Harriet Tubman
by
Eloise Greenfield

Harriet Tubman didn't take no stuff
Wasn't scared of nothing neither
Didn't come in this world to be no slave
And wasn't going to stay one either

"Farewell!" she sang to her friends one night
She was mighty sad to leave 'em
But she ran away that dark, hot night
Ran looking for her freedom

She ran to the woods and she ran through the woods
With the slave catcher right behind her
And she kept on going till she got to the North
Where those mean men couldn't find her

Nineteen times she went back South
To get three hundred others
She ran for her freedom nineteen times
To save black sisters and brothers

Harriet Tubman didn't take no stuff
Wasn't scared of nothing neither
Didn't come in this world to be no slave
And didn't stay one either

And didn't stay one either

Harriet's back . . .

Pro-Life Essay Competition

Category 1

(3rd-4th grade)

(5th-6th grade)

In the Gospel of Luke, we read about Elizabeth’s greeting to Mary at the Visitation:
“At the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.”
Still a pre-born baby, John the Baptist already understood that he was in the presence of Jesus. How is a pre-born baby just like you and me? And how can you participate in building a culture of life by helping others see that pre-born babies are human beings just like you and me?
Write 500-800 words (3-5 paragraphs) responding to the essay prompt. Have your parent, legal guardian, or teacher submit your essay using the form on this page.
Deadline: December 6

Category 2

(7th-8th grade) (9th-10th grade)

(11th-12th grade)

Essay Prompt:
When Mary, pregnant with Baby Jesus, visited her cousin Elizabeth, Elizabeth knew immediately that Mary was carrying the Son of God. Elizabeth greeted her with these words:
“For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.”
How would you explain to a peer who claims to be “pro-choice” that from the very moment God creates a pre-born baby he/she is a human being with value and dignity and who deserves both the chance to live and our protection without exception?
Write 800-1200 words (5-7 paragraphs) responding to the essay prompt. Have your parent, legal guardian, or teacher submit your essay using the form on this page.
Deadline: December 6

Puppy Love trivia:

And then time passed . . . .
The Osmond Family hit some hard times due to unfortunate business investments. They could have declared bankruptcy but the Dad believed that all debts should be honored.  So the WHOLE family worked extremely hard, redoubling efforts, even accepting State Fair gigs, and taking no time off until the debts were all paid in full. The reneged on no one.

Sometimes the fans got a little crazy.

Donny remained pretty amazing . . . .

And later with great showmanship, humor, and humility . . . .

And to think that they started singing to raise money for hearing aides for two of their brothers.
What a talented family!
