for Friday, November 30, 2012 (Biography) fi11&12

Dear Class,
KWOs are due this Sunday evening. Please scan and send a pdf file OR have a parent snap a picture and send it to me.  PeggyCortez@hotmail.com

As we discussed in class, your assignment is to write a 3-paragraph biography using at least two sources. Please ask your parents for their suggestions.

This is a perfect opportunity to integrate IEW and a current homeschool subject of study. Try to start with a great opening "hook," interesting quote, teaser or fascinating fact (and remember that your clincher must relate to it in a suitable way).

IN EACH PARAGRAPH:

• Use every dress-up, openers 1, 2 and a (6)vss.

• Topic and clincher sentences must relate to each other (repeat, reiterate, or reflect)

• Use at least two sources.

• Sources must be listed at the end of your essay.  If you use a website,  include the complete URL.

• Do not plagiarize. Use your KWO to help you remember the main facts so that you can share the information in your own words.

• Formatting counts!

• Include the IEW CHECKLIST completed with words in the squares.

• Here is an example of a completed CHECKLIST. This one contains more required dress-ups and openers BUT it serves as a useful guide.

• You MAY handwrite words in your CHECKLIST.

Bring all of your vocabulary words (your master list) to class every Friday. . . .
REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR MASTER VOCAB LIST ON NOVEMBER 30.   I strongly suggest that you begin a word doc including each word, w/ definition, part of speech and sample sentence. Print it out, put the pages in page protectors, and keep it in your notebook.
You can use  SortMyList.com  to update your master list.

We have two FIX ITs due on November 30.  Start early!  :-)  Handwrite these, please.
Week 11
A dreadful storm was approaching, the great ship pursued her flying course over the tempestuous sea the waves rose mountains high as if they would have overtopped the mast but the ship dived like a swan between them.

at length the ship groaned the thick planks gave way under the lashing of the sea as it broke over the deck and the mainmast snapped asunder like a reed the ship lied over on her side and the water rushed in

The little mermaid now percieved that the crew were in imminent danger, and when a flash of lightning revealed the hole seen she could see every one who had been on bored accepting the prince.

When the ship parted she saw the prince sink exhaustedly into the deep waves, at first, she was glad because she thought he would now be with her but then she remembered that human beings could not live in the water he must not die

Week 12
Strewed about by beams and planks the sea heaved as she swam between them forgetting that the wood could crush her two peaces then she dived deeply under the dark waters until at length she managed to reach the prince.

Loosing the power of swimming in that stormy sea the prince would have precipitately perished had not the little mermaid come too his assistance, his limbs were failing him, his beautiful eyes were closed.

She held his head above the water, and let the waves drift them where they would, in the morning, the storm had ceased but she could not percieve a single fragment of the vanished ship.

Although, the sun restored the hue of health to the princes cheeks his eyes remained closed the mermaid kissed his high smooth brow, and stroked back his wet hair.

for Friday, November 16, 2012 (Apologetics) fi10

Dear Class,

I am very eager to hear your apologetics speeches on November 16. I encourage you to approach this writing assignment in prayer. My hope for you is that in researching and formulating your speeches, you draw closer to our Lord and that you find even deeper beauty in our Catholic faith.

The Template that we reviewed in great detail during our November 9th class is attached to this email AND can also be found on the right side-bar of our class website. Here is the direct link to it:
http://iewnotebook.blogspot.com/2012/11/template-for-apologetics-speech-meaning.html

Indicate all dress-ups, as well as,  openers #1, #2, & #6 in your speech.  (See the CHECKLIST)

Because this assignment does not follow our regular essay pattern, you have a lot of leeway. You MUST follow the template but you may use bullets, indentations and/or other sight cues for organizing purposes. You may even use different color fonts to help you find key points in your speech.

Although a typed speech must be submitted and may be read to the class, you may opt for 4X7 index cards as reference notes when you give your speech.

Remember to create a KWO for  CCM History weeks 4 and 5

Please choose one of the following questions for your speech:

  1. What is the meaning and significance of the image of God.
  2. What is the meaning and significance of original sin.
  3. What is the meaning and significance of the virgin birth?
  4. What is the meaning and significance of the Incarnation?
  5. What is the meaning and significance of Jesus as the Word if God?
  6. What is the meaning and significance of Jesus as the Lamb of God?
  7. What is the meaning and significance of Biblical canon.

Week 10
Dreamily the young prince appeared very handsome. As he pressed the hands of all present, and smiled at them while the music resounded through the clear, night air

although it was late the little mermaid could not take his eyes from the striking prince, the colored lanterns had been extinguished no more rockets illuminated the air and the cannon had ceased firing.

Suddenly the sea became restless and a moaning grumbling sound could be heard beneath the waves; rocking up and down on the unquiet water the little mermaid remained buy the cabin window

The sales were quickly unfurled and the noble ship continued her passage but soon the waves rose higher heavy clouds darkened the sky and lightning appeared in the distance.

FIX IT Week 9
The little mermaid swimmed close to the cabin windows, as the waves lifted her up now and then she could peer in through clear, glass windowpanes, and glimpse a number of well-attired people within.

among them was a young Prince with large black eyes who was sixteen years of age and his birthday was being commemorated with much rejoicing

When the vibrant prince came out of the cabin more than 100 rockets raised in the air, making it as dazzling as day, the ship was so brightly lit that the mermaid could gaze at all the people distinctly and plainly

Never having observed such fireworks before they so startled the little mermaid that she dived under water, when she again stretched out her hand it appeared like all the celestial stars were falling from the sky
