Your essay this week should be from the perspective of an animal. Your essay should tell the reader about a historical event or a distinctive time in history.

Think to yourself, "What if I was an animal living in the world during a specific time in history? What would I think? How would I perceive the world? How would I behave? What unique perspective might I have?"

Here are some examples. You may also choose your own idea!

The Great Depression filled the space between America’s Prohibition

(which was still in effect during the Depression) and World War II. The Depression affected the entire world. Well-to-do people lost everything and found themselves standing in food lines. Ordinary people went to extraordinary measures to get a meager meal. Meanwhile, someone, somewhere profited.
The entertainment industry boomed in the twentieth century. Technology

changed entertainment from an attraction you paid to see in a theater or other public setting to something you could enjoy from the comfort of your home. Every home had a radio. Black-and-white silent films evolved into Technicolor talkies. Now we have the Internet. Write a story centered on entertainment technologies of the past.
Write a story that is set around an important historical figure. Think: saint, leader, martyr scientist, performer, author, poet, musician, composer, athlete
Write a story that is set around a wonderful invention. Examples: the first airplane, the discovery of electricity, the telephone, morse code, the telescope, the automobile, the cotton gin.
Choose a war or battle from history as your writing prompt. It will be easier to focus on a specific incident rather than the whole war.
Throughout history, people have emigrated across land and ocean. Write a story about a voyage.

Personification

Definition:

Personification is one of the most commonly used and recognized literary devices. It refers to the practice of attaching human traits and characteristics with inanimate objects, phenomena and animals.

SIMPLY: when an object or animal just seems like it's doing something human

Example:

“The raging winds”

“The wise owl”

“The warm and comforting fire”

Anthropomorphism

Definition:

Anthropomorphism can be understood to be the act of lending a human quality, emotion or ambition to a non-human object or being. This act of lending a human element to a non-human subject is often employed in order to endear the latter to the readers or audience and increase the level of relativity between the two while also lending character to the subject.

SIMPLY: when an object or animal does human things

Example:

The raging storm brought with it howling winds and fierce lightning as the residents of the village looked up at the angry skies in alarm.

FROM SCHMOOP:

You might be thinking that anthropomorphism sounds a lot like personification—and you're right. But here's the difference. With anthropomorphism, the object or animal is actually doing something human. With personification, the object or animal just seems like it's doing something human.

ANTHROPOMORPHISM:

Who's your favorite talking dog? Goofy? Odie the pug?

No matter your answer, you already know anthropomorphism like the back of your hand. Put simply, it's when an object or animal does human things. We're pet-people here at Shmoop, so we like the animal ones the best.

An animal talking? Anthropomorphism. An animal singing? Anthropomorphism. An animal starting a revolution? Anthropomorphism.

That last one—George Orwell's Animal Farm—is probably the most famous examples of anthropomorphism, especially because the animals become more and more human throughout the book—by the end, they're walking on two legs and acting even worse than the humans against whom they rebelled to begin with.

Example? Don't mind if we do:

"The fog waltzed through the hills." Personification.
"The fog grew legs, grabbed a partner, and waltzed through the hills to the tune of 'Piano Man'" Anthropomorphism.

• Anaphora: Repeats a word or phrase at the start of every line or passage. (I Have a Dream - MLK)

• Anthimeria: Uses one part of speech in place of another. BEWARE! It can easily become silly and is often overused.

• Antiphrasis: uses a word with an opposite meaning for ironic or humorous effect. "We named our chihuahua Goliath."

• Appositive: places a noun or noun phrase next to another noun for descriptive purposes.

• Chiasmus: reverses of the order of words in the second of two parallel phrases or sentences. A chiasmus reverses grammatical structure, not necessarily w/ the exact same words.

* Antimetabole: reverses the EXACT SAME words in the sentence

• Epanalepsis: repeats a similar grouping of words at the beginning of a sentence and at the end. The repeated words act as "bookends.

• Epistrophe (AKA: Epiphora): repeats ending words (Gettysburg Address)

• Epizeuxis: repeats one word for emphasis

• Hyperbole: greatly exaggerates something for emphasis

• Metanoia: corrects or qualifies a statement to strengthen it or soften it in some way.

• Personification: is figurative.

It projects characteristics that normally belong only to humans onto inanimate objects, animals, deities, or forces of nature. Personification is figurative.

• Anthropomorphism is literal.

With anthropomorphism the non-human entities actually do human things. (Thomas the Tank Engine, Winnie the Pooh, Peter Rabbit)

What is IEW's Excellence in Writing?

Excellence in Writing successfully equips students with tools to significantly improve their writing skills. Its methods not only build written and oral communication skills, but also improve critical thinking.

Excellence in Writing methods can also be used across the curriculum to reinforce content area. Students learn to write as they write to learn. With diligent and consistent effort there is a wonderful transformation from immature or even reluctant writers to competent, confident communicators. It is possible to teach students with very high writing aptitude alongside those with undeveloped writing aptitude, and the system works magnificently at both ends of that spectrum.

Lessons in our class are carefully planned to be steps toward more sophisticated writing. Lessons build from week to week and each lesson is prepared with differing levels of challenge in order to accommodate expertise levels.

The Story Sequence Chart

This outline format is different from the ones you have learned so far. In Units I & II you took notes for each sentence in the source text, and in Unit IV you took notes from facts. In Unit III, you will use The Story Sequence Chart to ask yourself questions about the story. Put the answers in a three paragraph outline format.

Section I introduces the reader to the main characters and setting. Stories usually begin by introducing their readers to the time and place of the story. This is called the setting. Also at their beginnings, stories must introduce their readers to the main people (or animals) of the story- the characters.

Section II contains the conflict and plot. For a story to be interesting, it must move into the next crucial element – theconflict. This is the problem, want or need of the main character(s). Stories without some sort of problem to overcome, or need to be met, are not very interesting. Most of the action of the story is simply how the conflict is dealt with- what the characters do, say, think or feel with respect to the conflict. This is the plot.

Section III concludes with the climax, resolution and theme and this is usually the most interesting part of the story. If there is a conflict or a problem, there must be a way to solve it! We call the event that leads to the problem being solved the climax. Then come the results. The resolution shows what happens after the climax. By the end of the story, the characters and the reader have learned a lesson. What is the last line of a fable always named? Yes, the moral. Another word for moral is the theme of the story.

Writing with Their Own Voice

It has always been important to me to have my children develop their own voice in their writing, to have the paper sound like it is from their own thoughts and reasoning. IEW has helped my boys use the IEW tools in a way that makes writing in their own words easier. At first the checklists provided with the lessons seemed cumbersome and awkward. They did not enjoy all the “box checking.” For instance, as the sentence openers are introduced they had to go back and rewrite a lot of their sentences to make sure they had used each sentence opener tool. At first, the editing process was tedious and we all loathed that time of the week when we would review the writing and the checklist together. Progressively, each time we used the sentence opener tools in our writing, it became more natural. Now as the boys write an essay they can easily insert the sentence openers as they go along, they are on their mind. By incorporating the various style tools taught in the program, they have found their writing voice.
